Drinking Game Rules: Complete A-Z Guide — Play Free Online

Every party has that moment: someone suggests a drinking game, and then immediately everyone disagrees about the rules. "No, that's not how you play Kings Cup!" "We always do it differently!" This guide settles the debate — the official rules for every major drinking game, plus the most popular house rule variations for each.

Every game on this list has a free online version you can play right now — no cards, no equipment, no setup needed. Just open your phone.

Kings Cup (Ring of Fire)

Players: 3-15. Equipment needed: A deck of cards and a central cup. Place all cards face-down in a circle around the central cup. Players take turns drawing a card. Each card has a specific rule. When all four Kings are drawn, the last person to draw a King must drink the entire Kings Cup.

Key rules: Ace = Waterfall (everyone drinks in sequence, can't stop until person ahead stops). 2 = Give 2 sips. 3 = Take 3 sips. 4 = Floor (last person to touch floor drinks). 5 = Guys drink. 6 = Girls drink. 7 = Heaven (last person to point up drinks). 8 = Pick a Mate. 9 = Rhyme game. 10 = Categories. Jack = Never Have I Ever. Queen = Question Master (any player who answers the QM's questions must drink, until next Queen drawn). King = Make a rule and pour into the cup.

Never Have I Ever

Players: 3+. One person reads a statement starting with "Never have I ever..." Anyone who HAS done the thing described takes a drink. In the 10-fingers version, everyone starts with 10 fingers up — you put one down each time you've done something. First person to put all 10 fingers down loses (or wins, depending on perspective).

Strategy: The best Never Have I Ever statements are specific enough to be surprising but common enough that multiple people drink. Statements that only one person would drink to are boring. Statements that make everyone drink are fun but don't reveal anything. Aim for the middle.

Truth or Dare

Players: 3+. On your turn, choose Truth or Dare. If you choose Truth, you must answer the question honestly or take a drink. If you choose Dare, you must complete the challenge or take two drinks. As a drinking game variant: refusing any truth costs one drink, refusing any dare costs two drinks. Most groups establish a pass limit (2-3 passes per player per game).

Intensity tip: Start with mild questions at the beginning of the game. As people get more comfortable (and the drinks flow), escalate to spicier truths and more challenging dares. Our online version handles this automatically with intensity levels.

Pirate Barrel

Players: 2+. The digital version of Pop-Up Pirate. Players take turns poking the barrel. One specific poke will make the pirate pop out. Whoever triggers it drinks. No skill, no strategy — pure luck and suspense. The tension builds exponentially as safe spots are used up. Each game lasts 30 seconds to 2 minutes, making it perfect between longer games.

Variations: Loser does a dare instead of drinking. Loser picks the next game. Loser has to wear something silly for the rest of the round. Winner gets to give out 3 sips to anyone at the table.

Spin the Bottle

Players: 3+. Spin the digital bottle. Whoever it points to must complete a challenge — in the party version, either do the challenge or take a drink. Our digital version replaces traditional rules with randomized challenges that keep the energy up without relying solely on physical contact. The fairness of the digital spin (no uneven tables) makes it better than the original.

Would You Rather — Drinking Version

Players: 3+. A dilemma is presented: "Would you rather..." with two options. Everyone simultaneously chooses an option. The minority group (whoever picked the less popular choice) takes a drink. If it's a perfectly even split, everyone drinks. Bonus rule: before drinking, everyone must briefly explain their choice. The justification is often more entertaining than the vote.

Plinko — Drinking Edition

Players: 2+. Set up the Plinko board with drinking-themed prizes: "Take 1 sip", "Take 3 sips", "Give out 5 sips", "Finish your drink", "Safe!", "Start a Waterfall". Players take turns dropping the ball and accepting whatever fate the pegs decide. The physics make every drop genuinely unpredictable.

Finger Roulette — Drinking Version

Players: 3-8. Everyone places a finger on the screen. The countdown begins and fingers are declared safe one by one. The last finger remaining takes a drink. For larger groups, use Elimination mode: losers build up over multiple rounds. Perfect as a quick 1-minute game between longer activities.

Bomb Timer — Digital Hot Potato

Players: 2+. Start the bomb countdown and pass the phone around. Whoever is holding it when the timer detonates takes a drink. The randomized detonation time (you never know exactly when it'll go off) is what makes this different from a simple countdown. Play in a circle for maximum tension — the faster you pass, the better your odds.

Snail Race — Bet Your Drinks

Players: 2+. Each player picks a snail and places a drink bet on the outcome. Watch the race unfold — you can't control your snail, so all you can do is cheer and hope. Whoever's snail finishes last takes a drink. With tournament mode, run elimination rounds across the night and let the losers accumulate forfeits. It's the only drinking game where you don't actually do anything — and somehow that makes the tension worse.

Universal Drinking Game Rules

These rules apply to every game on this list:

  • No means no: Anyone can opt out of any game or any round. The goal is fun.
  • Define 'a drink' before starting: A sip is not a gulp. Agree on what counts.
  • Alternate with water: Drink a glass of water for every two drinks. Seriously.
  • Non-drinkers can play: Use water, juice, or soda. The games are fun with or without alcohol.
  • No drink and drive: Always have a plan for getting home safely.
  • Stop when it's not fun: Good drinking games should be getting better as the night goes on. If someone's having a bad time, stop and switch games.
