Rock Paper Scissors
The classic showdown — Rock, Paper, Scissors!
Rock Paper Scissors is the world's most widely played hand game, with origins traced to China around 200 BCE during the Han Dynasty, where a hand game called "shoushiling" was played as a gentlemanly way to resolve decisions. It spread to Japan as "Jan-Ken-Pon" (or "janken") in the 17th century, and finally crossed into Europe and the Americas in the early 20th century. Today it's played on every continent as a universal tie-breaker, turn-decider, and friendly competition. The rules are famously elegant: rock crushes scissors, scissors cuts paper, paper covers rock — a perfect three-way balance of power with no dominant choice. In 2005, tech entrepreneur Sam Kass invented the expanded "Rock Paper Scissors Lizard Spock" variant (later popularized by "The Big Bang Theory") to reduce tie rates. PartyPlay's free online version lets you challenge a CPU at three difficulty levels, battle friends in pass-the-phone mode, or run full tournaments (Best of 3, 5, or 7). Switch to Lizard Spock mode anytime for 5 choices and deeper strategy. Fast, fun, and instantly playable on any device.

Tips for Winning
- 01Against beginners, rock is the most common first throw — start with paper
- 02After losing, most people switch to what beat them — anticipate the pattern
- 03In Lizard Spock mode, Spock and Lizard are less intuitive — opponents often forget the rules
- 04Keep a mental note of your opponent's patterns — humans are terrible at being random
- 05In tournament mode, vary your strategy each round to stay unpredictable
- 06The CPU on Hard difficulty reads your patterns — mix it up to beat the AI
Rock Paper Scissors FAQ
What is Rock Paper Scissors?

How does the CPU difficulty work?
Easy mode picks randomly — pure luck. Normal mode has a 40% chance of countering your previous move, adding slight strategy. Hard mode counters your patterns 70% of the time, making it a real challenge to beat consistently.
Can I play with a friend on one phone?
Yes! In vs Friend mode, Player 1 makes their choice, then passes the phone to Player 2. Both choices are hidden until both players have picked, then the result is revealed dramatically with a countdown animation.
What is tournament mode?
Tournament mode lets you play Best of 3, 5, or 7 rounds. The first player to reach the majority of wins takes the match. It works with both CPU and friend modes, adding competitive structure to the game.
Is this game free?
Completely free — no signup, no download, no in-app purchases. Rock Paper Scissors works instantly in any web browser on any device. Your win streak is saved locally.
Is there a strategy to win?
Against humans, yes! People tend to repeat winning moves and switch after losses. In tournament mode, tracking your opponent's patterns gives you an edge. Against the Hard CPU, you need to be genuinely random to avoid being countered.
Does it work on mobile?
Yes — Rock Paper Scissors is fully optimized for mobile with large touch targets and smooth animations. The hand emoji buttons are easy to tap, and the reveal animation looks great on any screen size.
